Program Notes:

This work, for alto flute, soprano, and electronics, features the poetry of Syracuse poet, Tim Carter. His 2019 book, Remains memorializes his late mother with materials and interviews collected from the family and friends, that are transformed into lyrical poetry. This work, Too Late in the Evening, sets a poem from Remains and explores the same source material: cassette recordings from Tim’s childhood. Recordings from the past are used to create a sonic soundscape for the singer to sing Tim’s poetry from 2019, juxtaposing past and present memories.

This work was originally written for the SPLICE Institute in Kalamazoo, MI and was premiered in June 2023.
