Program Notes:

The ambiance of the everyday, the creak of the subway, the buzz of a cricket, the chirping of a bird, becomes the soundtrack to our lives. Hearing these sounds out of context immediately transports the listener to their source, whether it is an underground subway platform or an open field in Upstate New York.

I was walking home... is an exploration and amplification of these sounds. The work takes field recordings from my last day living in New York City and from my artist residency at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park located in my hometown of Cazenovia, NY and combines them to create a sonic portrait of two different places I’ve called home. My interest in working with these sonic worlds stems from my own penchant for wanderlust.

The work is structured in six sections that alternate between sounds captured in New York City and sounds captured in Cazenovia. These field recordings are digitally modified and amplified with additional electronics creating sonic worlds that move between the real and the surreal, offering a lens to reexamine the sounds of our everyday world.

  1. Orchard Path

  2. Times Square Preacher

  3. Thunderstorm

  4. Queens Bound ‘N’ Local Train

The work was created at Twin Woods Studios in Decatur, MI and in my home studio while in residence at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park. The work was commissioned by the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park as part of their 2014 Artist in Residency program.
